The First Meeting

"I first met Michael Jackson at a recording studio on Beverly Blvd. in Hollywood, where he was three quarters of the way through finishing what would be the largest selling album in history. CBS records indicated that the project was between myself and another very well known photographer whose identity was never divulged to me.

Michael wanted to personally meet both candidates before deciding who he wanted to work with on the album package. I know now after having worked a substantial amount of time with Michael on other projects since, that he needed someone that was at the top of his profession, wasn't egotistical, was trustworthy and creative. But most importantly someone who would treat him with delicacy and consideration, who wasn't threatening or offending.

My first impression of Michael as he slowly and carefully moved through the studio doors where our meeting would take place was that he was taller and thinner than I had expected. His hand shake was very delicate with hardly a squeeze, and I was very conscious to return the same.

As we talked, Michael would ask me questions in his whispered voice about my likes and dislikes. I could tell from the way he poised his questions, that in a sly way, I was being highly scrutinized. That's when I first realized how important it was to Michael to work with the exact kind of person that would make him feel comfortable. Our meeting lasted about twenty minutes and we parted with a cordial good-bye.

Ive downloaded my self-proclaimed "eclectic" CD collection onto the computers media player; now I have a mystery DJ in the room who tirelessly spins everything from Paul Simon to Phish on a continuous, random play mode.

Usually this is a good thing.

Right now, however, Im being treated to a live version of Sussudio by Phil Collins -- and I have to ask myself what kind of crack I was smoking when I added this shit to my play list. Im tempted to skip ahead to the next song, but I tell myself Im going to see Phils puffed-air version of the lame 80s tune to its painfully overdue conclusion. Alas; I cant take it anymore, and fast forward almost all the way to the end. There may be more crack-induced crap to come, but Ill take my chances.

Dont get me wrong I adore most 80s music and find it appealingly nostalgic. After all, the 80s ushered me from girl to woman -- age ten to twenty -- becoming a soundtrack recording for growing up Gen X.

Boy George really did it for me, Ill admit, and Ah-has Take on me was the coolest video anyone had ever seen. But I never did like Phil Collins (I was more of a Peter Gabriel girl), and so I look forward to the next song with ever-increasing impatience. Ill delete it later, I think, wondering how I ever came to own Sussudio in the first place.

Next I hear the opening violins of Selling Out by the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, and it feels like coming in from the cold. Yummy-warm funk meets frenetic sitar, slides into trip-hop, and dances with reggae all in the groove and just oooooozing cool. I heard this stuff at a friends house and immediately asked for the name of the album, which I wrote on my hand so I could run home and buy it online right away. I never tire of the Brooklyn Funk Essentials innovative sound, which sounds even better if youre listening at, say, 4:20.

As if reading my mind, the computer next decides to send some Bob Marley this way, specifically Stir It Up. Now thats what I call easy listening. Easy like a soft chair and a smile. Im always up for a Bob Marley tuneprobably not fifteen Marley tunes in a row, but then thats why I use random play.

Its fun to take note of the strange mix of songs that would never, ever be played back-to-back on any real radio station, anywhere, at any time. Only in my house does The Beastie Boys No Sleep Till Brooklyn segue peculiarly into Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here.

I admittedly read too much into the media players random song order. One time, I wrote song titles on a paper as they played, later attempting to divine some sort of fortune from the resulting message, doubtless sent by aliens or God. Because the Talking Heads And She Was played just before Eminems Without Me, I assumed my recently deceased friend Gina was dropping by to say hello. When David Byrnes The Accident preceded Sublimes Wrong Way, I knew better than to get behind the wheel of a carat least until I heard Roger Millers reassuring King of the Road or Cakes rousing Race Car Ya-Yas. You cant be too careful when interpreting the nonexistent significance of haphazard song play.

I suppose Id better quit identifying all my songs before it becomes blatantly obvious that my music tastes, albeit diverse, are rapidly approaching geezer status. My 18-year-old cousin has categorized most of my CDs as wuss rock a term for which I can certainly glean the meaning, but have never heard before and definitely hesitate to embrace.

I prefer to pretend its 1991, and the cousin in question is just 6 years old, all wide-eyed at my college-age, too-cool, flannel-clad rebellion. Let me tell you, sonny-boy, those were the days. Now please excuse me while the Pixies scream Debaser and I relive them once again.

We all dream about being rock stars right? Well the first step to achieving that dream is picking an instrument (unless you have a wicked voice). Playing the guitar can get frustrating at times but it doesn't have to. One thing you have to keep in mind while playing is that music should be fun and expressive. If you're not having fun you should set the guitar down (gently, no matter how bad you want to throw it) and doing something else for a good hour and come back to it.

So you've decided to play the guitar but don't know what to play? Start with chords! While learn chords can be dull it's important for all aspects of playing (yes even those shredding lead lines know their chords!) especially finger independence. If you don't have finger independence you're never going to get anywhere! You need to move each finger freely without affecting the other fingers and chords get you there. Simple chord shapes can be found all over the web.

Okay so you've got your chords down now you get to do the fun part... picking tunes to play. You may not be able to play your favorite songs right away (in fact you probably won't) but there's definitely some easy, groovy tunes out there. For example my first song was "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, second was "Black Dog" by Led Zep, etc. The common "first song" is usually "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple since the opening riff is easy yet fun and everyone knows what it is!

Something I really want to mention in here is these "finger pressure" exercises you'll see online. Please don't give into them. The more you play the less pressure you use because you learn how to instrument works and reacts to your fingers. There's absolutely no point doing "finger pressure" exercises unless your goal is to waste your time!

When playing guitar it's important to have an organized practice session if you want to see fast results. These are tough to figure out when starting out so I recommend joining a course or program. I have personally used and recommend Jamorama, also check out "Guitar Lessons and Gear Reviews" for more information.

Wolf Parade - Call It a Ritual

. . (in post from . Download this at Amazon iTunes)

I'm sure you've seen the ads: Schoenhut, Dexter, Fisher-Price. These are all brands of toy pianos that are marketed to parents of toddlers.

Many parents are attracted to them because of their look and their size, saying to themselves, "Oh, that would be perfect for my child. It's so cute!"

But have you ever tried a toy piano? While they may be cute and fulfill a need for a certain kind of toy and nursery furniture, they may leave much to be desired in terms sound and providing an instrument for musical development.

Let's see if the advantages of toy pianos outweigh the liabilities.

I've taught children who had toy pianos at first, and there is never any damage done, far from it, if a child plays a toy piano. I think they enjoy it simply because it makes pretty sounds. Anything that interests them in music and piano is good for their intellectual development.

But that is not our point today, but rather to see if there may be an alternative for toddlers that works better in providing a musical instrument adequate for musical development.

First let us enumerate the advantages of toy pianos:

1. They are attractive and this alone may interest the child in music.

2. They are inexpensive and portable

3. They have a standard keyboard setup with groups of two and three black keys.

4. They are mechanical devices, so you don't have to worry about electrical connections, outlets and safety issues.

5. The younger your child, the more appropriate a toy piano may be.

The only real alternative besides a real piano is the electronic music keyboard, such as the inexpensive Casio brands you see for around $99. You see them at Circuit City and electronic appliance outlets as such as that.

Here is a comparison of an electronic keyboard versus a toy piano:

1. Children's electronic music keyboards have real width keys, inch wide, while toy pianos often have "mini" keys to accommodate their tiny hands. It may be better to have the child get used to what real piano keys are like. On the other hand, anything that attracts your child to touch a musical keyboard is a good thing, correct width keys or not.

2. Electronic keyboards make a wide variety of sounds besides the standard piano sound of a toy piano. This may attract your toddler, or may confuse them. More sounds are available on a small keyboard but not usually on a toy piano, although undoubtedly there are products out there called "toy pianos" which make sounds in addition to something piano-like.

3. Toy pianos produce a sound made on what are usually small bell-like surfaces called "tines." It sounds more like chimes than a piano. An electronic keyboard's piano sound is usually very faithful to a real piano sound.

4. Electronic keyboards must be used with batteries to get around the safety issues of outlets, power cables and connections. Toy pianos usually are mechanical devices that require no power, and therefore have the advantage of safety and convenience.

Whatever choice you make, a toy piano can be a great introduction to music, which will eventually produce many benefits such as increased math scores and better handwriting.

Better to get a toy piano at first and then upgrade than not get started at all. Music skills develop at a very young age.

Elvir Lakovi Laka - Pokuaj

Laka - Pokuaj (Live from Semi-final of Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade) I care less for the goofy performance and artsy mischievousness than the actual song that could become one of the better alternative poprock songs ever… (in post The song that should have won Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade from The Lemur Blog. )

So, you want to know how someone creates an entire solo piano CD. It seems like a monumental task - and it is unless you break it down! Here's how I do it step by step.

Step One

The first thing I do is find the concept. I also consider this the most important aspect to creating an entire "album" of songs or pieces. Why? Because this is what gives you inspiration! For example, when I created my 2 CDs La Jolla Suite and Anza-Borrego Desert Suite, the first thing I did was find the concept or title I would be using for the CD - in this case the 2 names you just read above.

You see, having this to start with gives you encouragement and inspiration to go on. This is because you can "see" the finished product. I remember quite well how excited I was when I first came up with the idea for "La Jolla Suite." La Jolla is a section of San Diego (a very beautiful section) that gave me all the artistic flow and energy I needed for completing it.

Step Two

Come up with your song titles. After the concept is identified and you know what you'll be working on, it's a good idea to flush out the entire album. Does this process remind you of anything? Yes, it's like what an author may do when preparing a book outline. Very similar indeed.

For La Jolla Suite, it was quite easy! I simply wrote out the places and things I loved the most about this fantastic place and the outline appeared very quickly. Another important aspect of the song identifying process is deciding on length. If your compositions tend towards the long side (7 minutes or more for each one) then plan on having 7 or 8 pieces. On the short side (3-5 minutes) plan on having many more. The goal is to create enough material for a 50-60 minute (or more) CD.

Step Three

Now, once you have the concept and the song titles, you're ready for the fun part. The song titles can actually suggest the mood of the piece! I remember when I was composing Sea Caves (a piece for La Jolla Suite). I kept repeating the words Sea Caves to myself then just went to the piano and literally "felt" the piece through. It came out to be a somewhat sad mood but that's exactly what I felt so it worked out.

This plan of action works well because you've already flushed out the outline for the entire CD. Now, the fun creative work can occupy your time. I think it took me a few months to completely finish all the pieces for La Jolla Suite. The rest of the time was spent in polishing them and getting them ready for performance.

So there you have it - a workable plan for creating an "album" or CD of your music!

Jazz Improvisation - Secrets, Part 1

No matter what instrument you play and regardless of how long you have played it's vitally important to begin incorporating some jazz improvisation or just improvisation practice into your daily routines (you do practice daily, don't you?). Let's look into the reason why this makes sense:

First we need an analogy: let's equate music with language-- for me that language is English. Now what are the component skills that one needs in order to have a true command of that language? To be able to to read it and write for sure. However, an oft overlooked and certainly under practiced skill is the ability to speak well, especially under pressure. For example, think of all the times in your life you wish you could come up with just the right words for that particular occasion: proposing to your sweetheart, asking the boss for a raise, negotiating your price for your new house, give an impromptu toast at a dinner and so forth.

The ability to read or write does not really come into play in these situations. Of course you could read your pre-prepared marriage proposal, or read your raise request to to your boss but that would not be practical and it is doubtful you would achieve your desired goal. High school and college debate teams train for their competitions by verbally "sparring" with one another until they can think of the appropriate words with just the right inflection at the appropriate time. Public speaking organizations such as Toastmasters help their members in an encouraging atmosphere to acquire public speaking skills. These skills are only in some way indirectly related to the ability of being able to read the printed word and write it down. I'm telling you that this is exactly the challenges we are presented with when learning a musical instrument (even if your instrument is vocal!).

My experience growing up as a young musician will illustrate my point quite well I think. I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade. We studied from the Rubank Elementary Method book (still around to this day!). "Now this note is called a G, it's on the 2nd line of the treble staff and it is held for 4 counts: 1-2-3-4. Now you try, and so on. This is the letter A , it sounds like this: see the word apple, can you say it," and so on. This is how it goes unless you get a teacher or mentor that realizes a whole dimension of your music education is being largely ignored. Once a musician has a "vocabulary" of a dozen notes or so it's time to begin some improvisation practice. Unlike the rote skill of sight reading from a score, taking a break and just freely playing an improvisation of the melody line can be a refreshing change of pace that ( make no mistake about it) is increasing your skills as a musician regardless of the "style" of music you play or want to play!

So here I am in my high school stage band when the director looks at me in the middle of a tune and said those ominous words: "OK Marty, take a solo!" I looked down at my music panic stricken. Where were the notes! All I saw were a series of slash marks (////) with funny symbols above them like Bbm7/Eb7/F7 and so on. Needless to say my first "improvised" jazz solo was a disaster even though it was comprised of mainly rests! Sometime later the director approached me with an LP recording. Some of you may remember, a vinyl "record" you played on a "turntable" that spun around at 331/3 rpm...OK if you don't have a clue Google it!

Anyway, the name of the record was Nothin But the Blues. It was a play along record by a jazz educator named Jamey Aebersold. You would put the record on and hear a jazz trio of piano, bass and drums play what I later learned was called a "12 bar blues chord progression" that repeated for a number of "choruses". I supplied the lead line and the improvised solos. Well I wore that record out! It actually changed my musical "life" and focus. Now I own the CD version and break it out once in a while to share with my students. I have students that have played for much less than a year playing decent improvised solos! Do they understand the meaning of an Fm7 or C7 chord. Some do, but most do not. The fact that they do not yet have a total command of the "vocabulary" DOES NOT AFFECT THEIR ABILITY TO PLAY A DECENT IMPROVISED SOLO.

A baby says "mama" or "dada" before they can read it or write it! A baby starts putting words together and making silly sounds because not only is it fun but this is a fundamental part of how we learn a language- and after all isn't music a language? Stay tuned for Jazz Improvisation Secrets Part II.

Disguising Repetition in Kids Piano Lessons

A clever kids piano teacher knows how to disguise the repetition of short passages so that the student is not fatigued by the repetitive effort.

In piano teaching, a short portion of a piano piece is usually called a "passage." A passage has to be worked on, like tilling a field, until it is smooth and may be recombined with the rest of the piece.

Younger children require more creative effort on the part of the teacher in order to make the repetition of passages palatable to their shorter attention spans.

But first we should ask, why repeat passages at all?

The answer is, of course, continuity. Music is most pleasurable when it is continuous, not broken up by the stumblings of the inexperienced performer. For example, if you listen to a pianist or a band or sing in church, the group doesn't stop if there is a mistake: that is musical continuity.

And continuity comes from familiarity. If you are familiar with every part of a song, it is reasonable to assume you can play the music continuously, so that we, your listener, can enjoy it.

So the object of repetition is to familiarize your brain with every little wrinkle of the piece. Think of it as driving a thought deep into your subconscious, into the BACK of your brain.

Glenn Gould, famed concert pianist and iconoclast, remarked that sometimes he looked down at his hands and thought he wasn't playing: the music was so ingrained in his brain that he was not aware of the efforts required to play Bach fugues without really thinking about it!

But that's what you're after, a kind of out-of-body experience where you know the piece so well that your fingers almost play it by themselves.

So how do we disguise repetition for the younger kids?

First, teach them the rudiments of six short piano pieces they know outside of piano lessons, like Jingle Bells. It doesn't have to be a whole song, it can be a passage or fragment. Then, write the names of the songs on a Post-It in a numbered list. Take a pair of dice and let the child throw and see which song they have to play. This takes the tedium out of playing one piece over and over. Besides, the dice make it a game.

Second, bait and switch. Work on a passage a little, then say, "Oh, let's drop that for a while," especially when you see the first signs of fatigue. Work on something else for a few moments, and then suddenly come back to the first, abandoned task. It will seem fresher to the child the second time if there has been a break.

Third, make a game of it. Ask them to bet their mom's sofa that they can't play that song again perfectly. Make the basis of your bet something utterly ridiculous, like their washing machine, but act very serious. They will play along. As they repeat it, maybe point out a thing or two, a fingering here, add a part there, and work on it a few seconds, then move on.

Take all three of these ideas and combine them, and you have a child-friendly way of "practicing," repeating short passages over and over without the child feeling exhausted.

Offering a child a piano game in equal measure to hard work is a recipe for a happy student who proceeds at their own, comfortable pace.

Bass Guitar Tab

Bass guitar tab has become a very popular method of writing bass music. With this tool you can learn to play bass music fast without getting bogged down in a lot of unnecessary theoretical stuff.

The bass player's role is just to keep time. It is very simple. A lot like bass players. Keeping time is done by playing a 'bassline' which is usually a rhythmic' sequence of notes. The bass player unites the rhythmic playing of the drummer with the chords and melodies played by the lead guitar. Does this take talent? Yes it does. The bass guitar player is the guy who turns off his brain and becomes one with the music. He then turns his brain back on and assumes the mantle of the designated driver for the rest of the band.

The bass guitar tab gives the guitarist written directions on what to play to give the bass line to a piece of music. Tablature is a written representation of the strings of the guitar using numbers to show the frets. If you want to learn the bass guitar quickly tab is the way to go. It is easy to pick up and to remember, and it enables you to learn very quickly the riffs and phrases you need to give your group's music that something extra.

A bass guitar tab is a picture of the fretboard which can be drawn using Notepad on your computer or by hand. The frets are numbered on lines representing the guitar strings. If you have a four string bass, the upper string is the G string, next the D string, the A string, and the E string. The numbers below the lines are the frets where the notes are played. If there is zero below the line it means the open string is played. A chord is represented in bass guitar tabs by two numbers, one above the other. Most bass guitar tabs contain a legend which explains any unfamiliar terms.
